I had to restrain my hopes when I bought this Kindle eBook. It's big so I thought I had a chance at learning how to use the difficult to learn Microsoft Project 2016 I owned. I'd read that my version was a minor upgrade from the 2013 version so I figured it would work for me. Well, it didn't, but not because there are that many differences between the two versions.Let me begin in the author's defense. It seems that Ms. Bonnie Biafore, the author, started with a great project. I say this because there are sample data files that seem to be coordinated for virtually every chapter. But my guess is that when someone, whether it is the author or the publisher, saw how big the book was becoming, the idea of a book that had coordinated tutorial files and instructions was nixed. Instead, the data files are only referenced in the captions of the screen captures.Next, the book is, therefore, not a tutorial but compendium of usage steps that are hard to organize into a cohesive whole in my mind. Note that Bonnie is an engineer. That leads me to suspect that she is quite intelligent which explains why I find the book hard to really understand. This book is really starting to frustrate me. I try and study the sample files but can't understand what she is trying to do with her sample files. Therefore, if I make changes to a file, I don't understand when, why or where the changes ripple. If I can't understand what effect I have, I can't learn the software. This is my 2nd book on this version of Project. I can't really stand a print book, so many Project books are not acceptable to me. I won't get into why I guess so many authors won't offer their titles in eBook format. But I've scoured the available popular books on Project, and none that are less than $50 offer a coordinated text and data file combination. I'm afraid I'm going to have to spend around $60 on a book on MS Project if I want any hope of learning this program that I find both useful and important.A few caveats:1. DO NOT buy the program. Subscribe to Office 365 and get the upgrade. Here's why: a. The purchase of MS Project Standard is less than a subscription. I paid $400 to buy it. The subscription runs around $45 / month, so you'll pay 2-3 times as much in the long run. But ... b. In the subscription you get the Project Professional, not Project Standard. The books I checked out or bought periodically used Professional's features and you'll want them. c. You get tech support included in the subscription price. Not sure this is worth it because Microsoft does NOT seem to have Project specialists in their free technical support department. d. If you purchase instead of subscribe, there is zero free technical support. e. Moreover, Project is a Microsoft "professional" program. That means each support incident is a whopping $500! f. DO NOT buy a book that does not correspond with your version. There will be enough differences to ruin your efforts.2. DO NOT buy a cheaper book. The Dummies, Missing Manual, and Step By Step just aren't worth the effort in my opinion. Several books are in the $65 range. I'm thinking of going with one.3. Note that many MS Project books are geared towards project managers. If you're using Project because, for example, you're an author, you may have some problems.Best of luck.
I bought this for a Project Management class and the layout of the manual is hard to follow. Because it is electronic page number don't match up well so I had a hard time doing projects for the course. I just broke down and purchase the actually book. It you are using outside of a course it should work well. The content of the book is easy to follow and apply.
I purchased for an online class in tech project management that I am taking. Very easy to read and follow, makes using Project 2013 a breeze! The author does a great job of translating a boring PM software manual into an enjoyable read. Would recommend for anyone looking to master Project 2013.
I only used it a couple times for class. It went into more detail about different things than my textbook did; however, I barely used it throughout the quarter. I rented the Kindle version which made it very easy to search and find different things in the book.
Bonnie takes a real world approach to project management and applying those principles to MS Project. MS Project works more productively for the user if they have a process and a goal for developing schedules. Her methodology of project process first and then apply the process with example for using the software is spot on. For many years I have used MS Project 2010 Missing Manual as the text I distribute in my classes and I look forward to using MS Project 2013 as I continue to teach MS Project.Ellen Lehnert, MS Project MVP
Another one of those books that become a critical item if you work with this program . . . I find it useful as a "go-to" tool when I get stuck attempting to do something new with this program. Definitely a welcomed "right hand man" when your stuck!!!
Class required textbook. Easy read/understand and worth the investment.
Ms. Biafore has provided an excellent introduction to Project planning and use of Microsoft's software. The book is well designed and the illustrations and diagrams are very useful. Excellent introduction to Project.
