After reading the This Man trilogy and falling head over heels in love and lust with Jesse Ward, I was an immediate fan of Jodi Ellen Malpas! I lost count of how many times I've read that trilogy. Jesse is the ultimate book boyfriend. He's alpha, intense, sexy, passionate, loving and a freak in the bedroom. Who could ask for more...right! I thought Jesse's secrets took the cake but even I had to say "bloody hell" when I found out what Miller was hiding. I pictured Henry Cavill as my gorgeous Miller. The Brits have a plethora of gorgeous men that I could use as a visual for Miller but it chose between my two favorites (Stuart Reardon and Henry Cavill). Livy's story had me emotionally torn. I was totally thrown off guard by what happened to her mother and not for all the tea that was dumped during The Boston Tea Party, did I expect her to run away. I was stupefied by her admission to Miller but not to her best friend Gregory. I sat with my mouth wide open when Livy found out the truth about Miller and William!!! I had to take a minute and put the book down because I was shocked. Now I have to read book 2. This is not a match for This Man but it is a wonderful story too. It's a must read. I love Jodi's writing style and can't wait for her next book this coming fall.

I was a little apprehensive about this series. I fell in love with “This Man” late in the series. Not the case with this one.I was shocked when we find out what Miller does for a living. I couldn’t believe it. Huge SHOCKER!I also had a hard time grasping what Livy was up to after her grandad died. Another shocker.Miller is a tough nut to crack. Very controlling but he has manners for days! Which one is more prevalent? The controlling and obsessive compulsive tendencies. I’m very curious to learn where those bits come from.On to the next book in the series.

Livy is a shy waitress who doesn’t get out much. She has her reasons for avoiding men and dating and it has worked for her for a long time. Imagine her surprise when she catches the eye of a very sexy customer. While he may not have liked her coffee, he definitely liked her and he leaves her a note asking for one night of passion. Suddenly, Livy is wondering if she might want to start taking some risks. What intrigued me most about the Goodreads blurb I read was the idea of a girl getting notes from a mystery man. Well, as it turns out, it wasn’t such a mystery. That was a bit of a downer but I had many other issues with this book that lead me to almost consider not finishing it. Beware: totally unpopular opinion coming up. Many people love this series but I was sadly not one of them.Livy and Miller weren’t terrible main characters but there wasn’t a whole lot about them that really appealed to me. Livy has some abandonment issues and a sad past involving a family member that contributed to her reclusive nature. She wants to be sassy and in control but for some reason has surrounded herself with people who think they know how to handle her life better than she does. I’ll get to that mess in a moment. Miller is the classic hot, wealthy guy but a tad mysterious when it comes to how he has made that wealth. He’s OCD and very well-mannered but it is a quirk that has some corny outcomes. For one, he has a bad habit of repeating over and over to Livy that she must look at him when she speaks. His chronic need for order and neatness was only intriguing in that we want to know why but of course you don’t learn that in this first book. Also, he says “I concur” during sex (um, what?) and constantly refers to sex with Livy as worshiping. His oddness just didn’t melt my butter. My biggest issue in the book was the gaggle of nosy, controlling and irritating people in Livy’s life. The worst offender is Gregory, her best friend. I’m quite sure if anyone in my life called me stupid and told me to surrender all life decisions to them I would punch them in the face. Since Livy is such a sweet girl, this has apparently led him (and the others) to believe she is incapable of making a good decision. Gregory has met neither Miller nor Luke (another suitor of Livy’s) but he absolutely knows who is perfect for her. He thinks Livy is a walkover and that’s probably because she barely tells him to get lost as much as she should. I’ll excuse Livy’s Nan for being a total busybody who can’t mind her own business, but only because she raised Livy and loves her dearly. Still, at 24, how about you let Livy decide who she wants to date. Then there is Sylvie, a co-worker who has known Livy for 4 days yet seems to think she has every right to tell Livy what to do about everything. I eye-rolled and face palmed so many times during this book because of them. I couldn’t believe it.Still, despite the above nonsense, I was intrigued by Livy and Miller’s strange romance. Of course, he is emotionally unavailable and one night is all he can offer. Of course, Livy is different and he can’t stay away from her. Of course, he changes all his rules for her etc. It’s a classic theme and though it is not original, I still like it. However, this novel is 480 pages and I think that’s about 100 too long. The romance lost me when it started going in circles. Every conversation was a repeat of the last and every sex scene was described in detail. That gets old after awhile. I started skimming the book at around 50%.Of course, since there are 2 more books, the ending is finally when the story really gets interesting. Shocking secrets are revealed and things are left in the air. It was rather enthralling and it almost made me forget I spent the majority of the book ready for the end. However, it wasn’t enough to get me on board for the sequel. My grade: DI’m very disappointed since I heard great things about this author. I hear her This Man trilogy is great but the reviews for the next two One Night books seem to sound like more of the same to me so I’ll leave this series here and chalk it up to bad timing. Maybe if I had read this before other books that were similar, I would have had more patience. But, at almost 500 pages, I doubt it.

I must say I read very promising reviews, or else I would not have spent as much as I did on this book.I'll start with the few positives: Based in London so it was different in that respect for me, brought a different cultural feel to the story and new terms that I don't hear or use, so that was refreshing. This book followed a very small and strict timeline (if you've seen my other reviews I'm partial to good timelines). There were some moments that were comedic. Now on to the rest of my review: First of all the representative use of certain phrases or situations, example 1) leading her by the back of her neck? Seriously, the first time I read it I thought that's novel, that's different, then after the 10th time I said who does that! So weird, though I moved passed it. 2) He DEMANDS eye contact at all times (except when he's leading her by the neck), it gets old, he's constantly scolding her like a child (So much so she says that often as well). I think this was her way of trying to show dominance and submissiveness, it didn't come over well to me.I felt that the characters lacked real adult life styles, she's like 24, went to school, and yet starts working a few hours at a coffee shop. Only the two main characters were really developed, the others had potential but remained flat and lacked any tangible story of their own to make them feel real. And while the timeline wasn't too crazy, it was boring you are with this girl every minute of each day in the book, there is no skipping ahead to the next week or month ahead, so it gets monotonous with a lot of drivel that I really did not care about. Very little real build up, but again potential was there. All in all I felt that much of this was very similar to 50 shades of gray, he randomly meets her, he stalks her, he feels he's not good for her, she's his undoing, she wants to be with him no matter his quirks, he teaches her things in the bedroom that she didn't know about, they are the only two that exists.
