I really enjoyed this novel. It was a refreshing interpretation on the Perkin Warbeck mystery. I really liked the author's theories on this historical mystery and thought that it was quite plausible. The characters are really well written as well. I loved her interpretations of these historical figures and how she was actually fair to them without going the route many historical fiction authors normally seem to. The author's interpretations of historical figures such as Elizabeth Woodville, Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Lady Catherine Gordon, and Duchess Margaret of Burgundy were all quite well done and quite plausible in my opinion. For once, they are presented in shades of grey and not as "good" or "evil" to fit with the author's own personal bias. It was also nice to see Henry and Elizabeth affectionate for once, as they appear to have been historically. Most authors like to go the "cold husband who hated anything York" route. The narrator here is not a huge fan of Henry's but she at least acknowledges that he is kind to his wife and that he cares for her.In this book, the narrator, Grace Plantagenet, is an illegitimate daughter of Edward IV and thus the half sister to Elizabeth of York. The only thing we historically know of her as that she was mentioned as one of the attendants of Elizabeth Woodville's funeral. Because of this, the author had a pretty much blank slate to write Grace's story with, and she was pretty much the "Forrest Gump" of the time period. I enjoyed the subplot of Grace's forbidden love for her cousin, John of Gloucester, also an illegitimate son of a former King (Richard III).The only complaint I have is that sometimes Grace's personal story got a little dull (her husband was pretty dull as a character I thought, I liked John of Gloucester a lot better) and at times I wished she would go back to court to get away from the story of her domestic life.But otherwise, very very well written. The descriptions of the sights and sounds of the time period are very well done as well.
It was a bit long, so it took me a lot longer to read it than it normally does. Very much worth it though, a great read and extremely well researched! I checked just out of curiosity and yes - there really was a Grace Plantagenet. She's only mentioned in one place, in the description of the boat which carried the body of Queen Elizabeth (Woodville) to her resting place. But I love the way the writer uses terminology that was in use then - most of which I'd never heard or read of. The habits and dress of the court in that period, as well as the customs and the descriptions of the city and how personal things were done then. And the love story! All in all, it's an awesome novel! My first to read of hers, but I'll be reading more.
By using Grace Plantagenet as her protagonist, an historical figure that virtually nothing at all is known about, the author of this novel has opened the door to a world of 'maybes' and 'what ifs'. Although this may sound a little wishy-washy in fact the author's take on the Perkin Warbeck episode is very interesting. I like the idea that she has come up with as an explanation to the mystery, and I enjoyed seeing it unravel in the book.This novel is well-written, and the protagonist, Grace, has been skilfully developed by the author. The only downfall however is that the narrative structure is a bit long-winded. During some parts of the novel there is just not enough going on.
If you like historical fiction, it doesn't get better than Anne Easter Smiths novels. Her research is meticulous. Much more history than fiction. Written beautifully, there is of course romance and political intrigue to a degree that only those familiar with the history of both the royal families of England and the adjoining European nations, and the Church could appreciate. Her books can be trusted with historical facts and customs. Excellent read.
this is book about Plantagenents.The sequel to "Daughter of York' and "A Rose for the Crown" I love to read sequels and continuing stories within one plot. The last one "Queen by Right" I will buy soon, still have only library copy. Anyone who love historical fiction can read the book.

Ms. Smith has written a very readable book about the York dynasty and the Wars of the Roses. She does not stray from the historical facts, as other writers do at times. Her treatment of the characters is plausible. As is her conclusion about what may have happened to the Princes in the Tower. I enjoyed the book very much.
I read a lot of historical novels, and this one kept me interested the entire time. The characters are intriguing, and gave me a new point of view on a time period about which I had already read a few other novels. I gave this as a gift to another of my friends who also reads a lot about this time period, and she really enjoyed it as well.
