Books on dictating with Dragon are surprisingly thin on the ground and often tend to concentrate on adjusting your writing style to cope with dictation or practising drills. This does neither and is refreshingly different for it. Although it does touch on the above, the author has placed emphasis on getting your equipment and computer set up properly to achieve as much accuracy as possible early on, followed by tweaking the software and how you interact with it to improve things even further. The results, from my perspective, have been startling. Having followed the recommendations in the book, I finally feel like Dragon is a tool that is working with me, not against me. There's a lot in here I've never tried or even known about before and my accuracy is, without question, much higher than I've ever achieved in the past. The author does stress how important your microphone is, but there are also techniques that seem to dramatically jumpstart the accuracy of the software far beyond anything I've tried before. The excellent section on transcription is worth the price of the book alone, but the multitude of tips in here are essential for anyone just wanting to dictate at their desk. For anyone wanting to incorporate Dragon into their writing life, this is highly recommended.
I've used speech recognition software for years. Back in the 1990s, I used IBM's Via Voice. Then, I found greater accuracy with Microsoft's free speech recognition software (it's inside Windows). In the past year, I've switched to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but -- until I read this book and followed Baker's advice -- I still felt that dictating books was a really s-l-o-w way to write a book. (Nevertheless, when a recent case of tennis elbow made typing difficult for a few weeks, I had no other option.)Yesterday afternoon, I read "The Writer's Guide to Training Your Dragon...," and immediately went to work, following his advice. I set up my microphone and added a new Dragon profile, exactly the way he said. I followed his dictation tips, and -- wow! -- my writing speed doubled on the first try. This is important: Following his advice, I had to make only three corrections in over 800 words of dictation. (I'm writing something historical, so some of the words aren't in Dragon's dictionary.) That's impressive.Baker's advice took the stress and frustration out of using speech recognition software. I'm no longer distracted by the errors, so I can write better, faster, and more fluidly.I'm grateful to Scott Baker for sharing so many helpful tips. The quality of my writing improved, overnight, and my output has doubled on the first try.
Dragon Naturally Speaking and I have had a tumultuous long-term relationship. It started with Dragon 5 and includes every update since then. Until release DNS 13 results were spotty at best.Like most writers dictating doesn't come naturally. As Baker points out people feel self-conscious talking to themselves out loud. Along with suggestions on how to resolve the awkwardness of dictating he offers practical suggestions for equipment and software settings.I've got a confession. Baker's book wasn't the first book that I read on the subject, but it was the only one that gave a realistic approach on using Dragon. Some of the advice runs counter to what you'll find in other books on the subject, but for me what he says makes sense and works!
Excellent! A brief and straightforward manual to get the most out of Dragon products. I downloaded Dictation for Mac, followed the instructions and the tutorials, and obtained horrible results, consistent with the bad reviews you can read at the Dictation for Mac page on Amazon. After reading The Writer's Guide to Training Your Dragon and following its advice, accuracy shot up from 40% to 95%.This book should come with Dragon Naturally Speaking and with Dictation for Mac. Thank you, Scott Baker!
Learned a great deal. The author doesn't mess around with a bunch of blah blah blah. Gets right to the meat, and there's quite a bit for the size of the book. I'd call it the essential guide, personally. I'd played with Dragon years ago, back when it wan't quite up to the mark. It is now, but you still need to know the tricks to get the best out of the tool. He gives them to you, and in short order. Very impressed, and pleased with the hardware he recommended. I already had the computer setup, but knew nothing about mics or recorders. Five stars and well deserved.
I wish I'd had this book years ago when I started using voice recognition software because "The Writer's Guide to Training Your Dragon" is the most comprehensive tool I've ever encountered when it comes to dictating. The author really knows his stuff! Even when I was halfway through this book I could already see a vast improvement in my dictation accuracy. I therefore highly recommend this to anyone who's thinking about getting Dragon NaturallySpeaking or is already using it. And yes, I dictated this entire review within seconds!
After hearing many authors talk about the benefits of dictation, I decided to give it a try. Knowing how hard Dragon software can be to optimize, I decided to try this book as an aid to maximizing my benefits.I'm glad I did! This book has been an invaluable resource in allowing me to get the most out of a software package many people find enraging on a Mac. For both dictation and transcription, the tips included have been immensely helpful. If you bought Dragon for your Mac, I highly recommend this book to save you a load of headaches. It's been a lifesaver!
A MUST HAVE IF YOU ARE GOING TO DICTATE YOUR BOOKS!! One of the best. The set up of the microphones and recorder are worth much more than the price of the book. Use it as a guide to setting up your own dictating system and get greater accuracy with Dragon NS or Dragon for Mac. Can't recommend it enough. Again, I repeat, a must have for your Dictation Library!
