When you read that Hagnes Carpenter screams at Karen calling her a traitor for wanting to move out of the house you see, in a nutshell, the motherclucking that Karen was subjected to. If you want to understand the damage caused by narcissistic and controlling mothers I suggest Peg Streep's work on the subject. You will get a much greater understanding of why Karen ended up the way that she did.Randy's book really exposes a lot of the family dysfunction that existed in the Carpenter family. Enmeshment and controlling behaviors abound and you could describe Karen's relationship with Richard as emotionally incestuous. The family's denial of Karen's mental illness and their lack of support during her treatment speaks volumes.The two big differences between Randy's book and Ray Coleman's biography are the details of her solo record project, which was glossed over in Coleman's book, and her marriage to Tom " Show Me Da Money" Burris. She jumped right into the deep end of the empty pool with this clown. He abused her like a rented mule. And her momster makes another star appearance demanding that Karen go through with the wedding after Karen found out Tom "I lease everything I have to give the appearance of a millionaire" Burris lied to her. Scum.After reading both Coleman's book and Randy's book I have so much sympathy for Karen. She was dealt some difficult hands in life: her cold mother, fame at age twenty, which I think exacerbated her self-conscious issues, and a self-absorbed brother who saw her as a meal ticket. I wish that she could have set some firm boundaries with her family, got into treatment sooner, and learned how to be the architect of her own life. She would have been much better off for it.
I was one of those people who shyly purchased Carpenter albums, and was afraid to tell my friends that I was secretly a huge fan. I always felt that the true story about Karen's untimely death had never been previously told. This book tells the complete story, and I'm thankful to Randy Schmidt for documenting the life of this great singer. The names mentioned throughout this book will be familiar to anyone who had more than just a passing interest in the 1970s music scene. I came away from this book feeling great sympathy for Karen's situation. She was a sensitive soul, trying to exist in an insensitive environment. I know that during the 1970s hardly anyone had heard of anorexia nervosa. And I don't like to place blame. But it seems to me that the Carpenter family dynamics were toxic for Karen. I'm puzzled that even to this day, Richard (like their late mother) is clueless about the family's role in Karen's demise. Thank you Randy Schmidt for documenting the truth about what happened to Karen Carpenter, one of the great pop voices of the 20th Century.
An authorised biography of the Carpenters' story was published in 1996 by Ray Coleman, who collaborated with Richard Carpenter on the project. As you can imagine, it was heavily edited and re-edited by Richard to smooth out some of the more shocking aspects of Karen's story. This book, written by Randy Schmidt, is a completely different story. Free from the shackles of the Carpenter estate, Randy tells the uncensored, sometimes shocking truth about Karen's life and untimely demise. Meticulously researched and featuring interviews with some of Karen's closest friends, this is much closer to the true story. If you want to know what really went on behind the scenes and are even just a casual fan of the Carpenters, then this is the book to buy. A sad, but fascinating and ultimately cautionary tale about one of the most beloved singers of the 20th century. Five stars.
I had to take a break from this book - it was depressing to read how weak she was (due to her awful mother). It was sad of course, and you knew how it was going to end, but it became tiresome reading about how everyone around her knew she was depressed and she took so little control of her life - but they just basically watched from the sidelines as she self destructed.I remember watching their last TV special and being stunned at how terribly thin Karen was. At the time I figured she had cancer.I was surprised to read that she really had a very quiet voice, and couldn't be heard singing unless she was directly in front of the microphone. Also, the details on their early concerts and their superb musicianship/paltry stage presence felt like the music industry just let them down. After reading about how Richard was raised to become the "star" by their parents, and instead it was Karen who became a household name, you could see why she felt guilty about her fame.The part of the book where Karen's family is finally in a counseling session with her was heartbreaking.If you are interested in reading about Karen Carpenter I actually would recommend this book, just be prepared for the sadness of her life to stay with you a while.
