I bought this book on a whim after hearing another friend speak highly of it. And I am so glad I did, I've never read anything this practical about the art of sermon creation and delivery. Even though I have possibly a whole shelf devoted to books on preaching, this one stands alone in its approach. It is designed to help preachers focus on a couple easily applicable ways to make sure sermons, that are already gospel-centered, move their hearers in a more powerful way. I imagine most people will be stretched to apply at least one of the methods Yancey covers, to aid their sermons.After blasting through the book, I immediately bought 4 more to give to leaders in my church, needless to say I highly recommend giving it a read.
There are few things more excruciating than listening to a boring sermon. From experience, I would argue preaching a boring sermon is right at the top of that list. No pastor wants to bore people with the Word of God, but many do.The one gaping hole in my library has been a practical book that gets into the nitty gritty of preparing and delivering a sermon that people will actually want to listen to. That’s why I was so thrilled as I read this book. Arrington avoids the common pitfall of trying to conform the reader into himself with principles broad enough to apply to any theological tradition and narrow enough to be applied to any specific preacher. This book is accessible for young preachers who are just finding their voice and contains plenty of insight for experienced preachers with decades of experience under their belt.
I've been preaching for 20+ years and I believe this book will be beneficial for all preachers. In seminary and most preaching books, the focus is on content and not on delivery. I'm thankful for the focus on delivery. As a preacher in multicultural contexts, I believe what's shared in this book transcends culture (except for the skiing thread in this book - I know several pastors who've never been skiing). If what's written in this book is put into practice (the challenge of most books), it will help you become a better preacher (the best preacher YOU can be). Thanks Yancey for writing this, I'll pass it on to my preacher friends and mentors.
As a Preaching Pastor myself, I have read countless books on preaching. This book is without question one of the most helpful books on sermon delivery I have ever read! The book feels like a Preaching Pastor friend coming alongside you, coaching you up on how to deliver Gospel-rich, "people-centered" sermons that connect the Gospel to those sitting in the congregation each week. Great read examining preaching from a different than typical point of view. Arrington makes a strong case for the preacher to better know themselves and “whoâ€they are preaching to. The people-centered approach to preparation and delivery provides for greater impact while still holding tightly to Christ-centered,Gospel-driven, bible-focused content. A much needed resource for pastors searching to better connect their message with their people.
It’s a good book that I wish I had read when first starting to preach 10 years ago. And yet I can’t help but think it’s also a book I could only really appreciate after so many years of preaching. Congregations will owe this author a debt of gratitude for the difference it will have made in their reception of the gospel.
Yancey delivers. This book is gold. I typically don’t read books like this quickly. I burned through this one in 2-3 days. It’s well-written from a 20 year practitioner and preaching teacher. If you’be got room to improve your sermon arrangement and delivery, you’ll gain solid tools and your church will benefit. Excellent book for young, developing pastors and preachers.
I have read dozens of books on preaching, but this one is the most helpful on how to deliver a sermon! One of my main roles as a pastor is to equip and train other preachers and Preaching the Moves People is my go-to book for them. I highly recommend it!
